Maintaining Oral Health When Expecting a Baby
June 22, 2023Managing tooth loss is a common problem that many people face. However, there is still much misinformation about dentures as a potential solution. In this article, we tackle the commonly-held assumptions that dentures are a last resort. Instead, we look at how they can be an effective way to manage tooth loss.
What are Dentures?
Dentures are prosthetic teeth that replace missing or damaged natural teeth. They can be used to help improve the appearance of your smile. Therefore making chewing and speaking easier, and support facial muscles for a more youthful look. Dentures come in two types: complete (full) dentures and partial dentures.
- Complete dentures are a set of removable false teeth that replace all the natural teeth in the upper and/or lower jaw.
- Partial dentures are used to fill in gaps between healthy, existing teeth and can be removed or adjusted as needed.
Complete
Complete dentures can be either “conventional” or “immediate”. They are made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal. A conventional denture is ready for placement in the mouth about 8-12 weeks after the teeth have been removed.
Unlike conventional dentures, immediate dentures are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed. As a result, the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period. However, bones and gums shrink over time, especially during the healing period following tooth removal. Therefore a disadvantage of immediate dentures is that they require more adjustments to fit properly during the healing process. Generally, they should only be considered a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made.
Partial
A removable partial denture or bridge usually consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base. This is sometimes connected by a metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth. Partial dentures are used when one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. A fixed bridge replaces one or more teeth by placing crowns on the teeth on either side of the space and attaching artificial teeth to them. This “bridge” is then cemented into place. Not only does a partial denture fill in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from changing position. A precision partial denture is removable and has internal attachments rather than clasps that attach to the adjacent crowns. This is a more natural-looking appliance.
Dispelling the Myths Around Dentures: Are They Really a Last Resort?
Dentures are far from a last resort. Depending on the type of denture chosen, they can be the perfect solution to replacing an entire arch or row of teeth. Modern dentures are more comfortable and natural-looking than ever before, with some even using tooth-colored material for a more real appearance. As opposed to common belief, dentures don’t just fit on top of the gums like a huge piece of plastic. Instead, they are made to fit each person’s mouth perfectly and adhere to the gums with denture adhesive for extra security.
Who Benefits from Dentures?
Anyone who is missing several teeth or an entire arch can benefit from dentures. While there are a few other solutions to replacing multiple teeth such as dental implants, bridges, and partials, dentures may be the most affordable option for many people. In addition, dentures are easy to maintain and take care of; they only need regular brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush, soaking in a denture-cleaning solution overnight, and occasional trips to the dentist for adjustments or relines.
What is the Process Like?
The process for getting dentures starts with a consultation with your dentist. During the consultation, they will assess your oral health and discuss your goals for replacing teeth. Then, impressions and molds of your mouth will be taken to create custom dentures that fit perfectly to your mouth. Once the dentures are completed, you’ll have several follow-up appointments with your dentist to make sure everything fits and feels comfortable.
In conclusion, dentures are a viable solution for replacing missing or damaged teeth. They can help improve the appearance of your smile, make speaking and chewing easier, and even support facial muscles for a more youthful look. With modern advancements, dentures have become more natural-looking and comfortable than ever before.
