Dental X-Rays: Are You Safe?
March 27, 2019How Does a High-Sugar Diet Affect the Teeth?

Laser tissue treatment is an innovative service that only a few dental offices offer to their patients as a dental option. This tissue treatment provides the advantages of superior precision, minimized bleeding, infection reduction and accelerated healing during dental procedures. These services are performed with an actual laser that can both remove areas of decay or disease and boost healing at the same time. Find out what a tissue laser treatment can do for you!
Lasers for Laser Tissue Treatments
Laser light is becoming more and more important in the field of dentistry. In the past (and still currently used), dental x-rays were the best way to detect cavities in the mouth. However, scientists discovered that laser light can be even more effective at detecting cavities, especially sub-surface ones.
We’ve previously introduced laser cavity detection into our office that uses a pen-like wand to scan the surface of your teeth with lightwave technology. These light waves will pass through a healthy tooth, but will reflect off of cavities, allowing us to see the exact size, shape and location of deep cavities below the service. We know that the tissues of the mouth are just as important as the teeth, which is why we offer dental laser tissue treatment for our patients.
Our lasers emit a harmless beam of concentrated light energy within the infrared light spectrum. With laser light, we are able to work with hard and soft tissues in the mouth to perform effective treatments on our patients with much more efficiency than cutting with our usual tools. The dental laser targets inflamed gum tissue and removes it from the root of the tooth. Infected tissue must be removed to prevent a spread of infection and further tooth decay. We then use the laser to scrape off plaque and buildup around the tooth root, below or above the gumline. We clean the area, including any protrusions on the teeth allowing the gum and the root an opportunity to heal. Laser tissue treatment allows us to target gum disease and gum issues without general anesthesia.

Lasers
There are two different types of dental lasers that are used in the office: hard and soft. We use both of these types of lasers on both children and adults. The Consumer Guide to Dentistry reports that different dental lasers have different absorption characteristics, which is why they are used for different types of procedures. Absorption refers to what the teeth and gums are made out of and how well they absorb the laser light to receive effective benefits during procedures. Because lasers use light to work, their power depends on the amount of energy they carry. That energy is carried on a wavelength as it travels to your mouth. The shorter the wavelength, the more energy it carries. The longer the wavelength, the less energy it carries.
You will have either hard or soft tissue lasers during your laser tissue treatment:
- Hard Tissue Laser – These lasers cut through hard tissues such as bone. Their laser wavelength is absorbable by the calcium phosphate salt that you find in the bone and teeth of the mouth. We can cut into your hard tissues with extreme precision, much more than we could do without the lasers.
- Soft Tissue Laser – These are used for the soft tissues of the mouth such as the gums, tongue and cheeks. Soft tissue lasers are extensively used for periodontal treatment, which are our services meant to treat gum disease and other gum issues such as growths or sores. They are able to kill bacteria and help tissues regenerate. When using a laser for these type of treatments, the lasers seal blood vessels and nerve endings, allowing patients to feel little or no pain during the procedure.

Laser Tissue Treatment
Did you know that laser technology is also used to treat problems with your teeth and gums? Laser dentistry is a specialized form of dentistry that can literally use laser light to remove decayed areas of your mouth. It’s a great option for children, as laser dentistry is a virtually painless way to perform dental treatment. This is because laser light can cut and seal in the same instant. Instead of your mouth hurting from damaged nerves, nerve endings are sealed as an area is worked on. Tongue or lip ties in infants can be corrected painlessly, cavities can be drilled with a laser and laser tissue treatment on the gums is much more enjoyable.
We are one of the few practices that offer innovative laser tissue treatment. This can bring superior precision, minimized bleeding, reduced risk of infection and accelerated healing to a patient. Dental lasers require minimal to no stitches, are incredibly precise and reduce the risk of infection significantly. Advanced technology using lasers can help to:
- Detect subsurface cavities that elude x-rays
- Correct a gummy smile
- Reshape gum and bone tissue to expose healthier tooth structures
- Treat hot/cold sensitivities by sealing the tubules at the root of the tooth
- Disinfect a cavity prior to filling
- Treat cold sores, relieve pain and speed up healing
- Painlessly remove soft tissue folds created by ill-fitting dentures
- Accelerate the teeth-whitening process
- Remove tartar
- Treat TMJ
- Painlessly remove benign tumors inside the mouth in all soft tissues
- Treat limited tongue movement in children and babies; correct tongue and lip-ties
Easier Dental Work
Laser light in dentistry provides a quicker and more pain-free method to help treat your teeth and gums and remove decay and imperfections. Our patients prefer laser tissue treatment compared to other methods that involve shots, drills and invasive techniques. Lasers are very precise when used correctly, and are smoother options when it comes to performing a dental treatment. Our office is one of the few in Colorado that uses laser dentistry. Our dentists are highly trained and skilled in laser tissue treatment.
